I already finished my table of contents!! I just need to add the picture and then I'm done with it. It's going to be similar to Bark's table of contents since it's clean and interesting. I made it this way since it works so well with them. I'll just need to wait until Saturday to start all this. I added stuff like "10 life hacks that will make life easier for you and your dog", "Dog of the Month", etc. and it will have a short description of what the articles are about. I saw this type of articles in Modern Dog.

I saw in Bark Margazine that their covers are clean and have a transparent box and then the name of the articles that are included in the magazine inside the box. I like that since it looks clean and more modern. I will need to use a colorful background since their covers are simple but have colors that stand out like yellow or blue. I see that all the cover images have a picture of the dog and it's all focused and I have never seen any pictures in shallow focus so I'll just do it all focused. I want to use some colors that symbolize what dogs represent like loyal and friendly. I'm so excited to start taking the pictures on Saturday for my print!

I've been thinking all day about how to do my table of contents. I wanted to do like a simple one with a picture and just a small box in the bottom left corner with all the pages and article information. I also wanted to do like small circles with pictures of dogs in the circles and small boxes next to them for the article information. I'll see how it would look better when I put the whole project together. I haven't seen a lot of table of contents with the circles and small boxes so I think that I should go with the picture and the box in the corner. Since that type of table of contents works with them, then I'll do it to help my magazine to be better.

Finally!

I finally found what I can do for my 2 page spread! I found this girl that has a dog that has gone through a lot and now is fine and healthy. The past owners of the dog made her have a fear of going up the stairs. They would just mistreat her like if she was a toy. But now, the dog is healthy and smart now, but still has some fears. I think that this would be good so I can show my audience that dogs are kind of like people. When something happens in their lives they get traumatized and have fears. But also I would like to show how it doesn't matter from where the dog came from or what happened in it's past, since they can move on.

Im interviewing the dog owner next week so I'll have the chance of getting some pictures and probably interviewing her family members so I can get more information about this. After this I can go to a shelter and ask about some stories about dogs there that had a hard life but they're now living a happy life so I can write about that in my 2 page spread. I can also ask about how hard is it for a dog to come out of an abusive relationship with their owners.

Im still working on the template for the 2 page spread but I would like it to be a picture of the dog that is about 3/4s of a page and start the story in the bottom of it. Then, I can add smaller pictures where the writing starts so the viewers can visualize the article better. I'll probably finish it tomorrow, but it might all change depending on how the story goes.

Pup!

So, I started the Masthead! I didn't know if I wanted it to be all in capital letters or in all lower case since Dog Fancy had its masthead in all capital letters, but Dogster and Modern Dog has it in all lower case. I liked the color since it pops out and it will probably pop out with the picture that I'll use for the cover. I chose this color because blue symbolizes loyalty, and dogs are loyal to their owners.

If by any chance this color doesn't work, I'll change it to a color that contrasts the background. But I still want to work with the color significance so it has something to do with how dogs are. This weekend I'll take the pictures of the dogs in the dog park so I can start building my cover page(yay!).

I went to visit Petland and they didn't let me take pictures or ask anything there so I'll just do the 2 page spread about a shelter or I'll try to find a dog that has gone through a lot so it can make dog owners appreciate their dogs more and so people know what some dogs go through in life. That idea would be hard to find but at least I'll try!

2 page spread !

I'm still not sure of what should I do my story on, but I have so many ideas. I would do a feature on someone that helps dogs at a shelter, a dog with a disability like not having a leg, on a shelter with dogs so people can know the struggle of the dogs there, find a dog that participates in competitions, or just about a dog and an owner and show the bond that they have and the importance of having a good and healthy relationship with your dog and how it helps the person and the dog. I'll figure this out during spring break since I'm going to the shelter or Petland to see if I can find a story.

I would like to have in the layout a big picture of the subject, in this case it's going to be the dog or puppy that takes up to 3/4s of the page, and have the title of the story in the bottom of the picture. Then the story will start. Probably put some facts about the dogs or adoption rates in the United States. I'll start to look for a story next week so Im super excited to see what Im going to do!

I really like the idea of going to a shelter and doing a story about how the dogs live there and how they need a home and what happens if they never get adopted so I can persuade the audience to go to the shelter and get a pet. Then, they would see the magazine so they can see homemade DIYs to make their life with their new friends easier and to also dont spend a lot of money since it will be homemade tips.

Cover Page!

After thinking for 1 week about what name I should use for my magazine I finally decided it! "Pup!". I want the Masthead to be with a white font that has a drop shadow that is not transparent, like it's just black behind the letters so you can see better the letters.

For the cover image I'm going to have a picture of a dog looking at the camera. The dog would be in a park or in a studio with just a colored background. I'll take both pictures and then see which one looks better when I'm continue making the cover page.

I'm going to put for coverlines lists like "6 things that you can do to take better care of your dog." and even put like a contest so everyone can submit a picture of their dog for a contest and then the magazine chooses which dog is going to be in the next cover of the magazine.

I'm going to start the cover page next week so I'll post everything that I'll do next week.

TOC!

I still don't know what the name of my magazine is going to be but I know how I want my cover page and my table of contents! It is going to be similar to "The Bark"'s magazine cover. It will be a picture of a dog that I will find at a dog park and I'll probably just take it with my phone and the fish eye lense to give the picture a funny effect so the nose looks bigger in the picture. I really like white letters since it makes the magazine look clean and nice. I still don't know which font I should use for the table of contents, but I'll figure it out this week

Dogster

Dogster is the style I want for my print. Have lists of tips and facts about the dogs or ways to make your life easier when having a dog. It has a fun font that gets everyone's attention and they use fun pictures of dogs to make it all fun and entertaining for people to watch. For the table of contents I would like to just have a pictures of dogs in like bubbles or boxes and next to it the title and page number. I dont want it to have a lot of words so it can catch people's attention. Dogster is really visually interesting and I would like to follow their example in the making of my print.

Modern Dog

In the "Modern Dog" magazine they give you information about dog life, wellness, dog training, food, DIYs and it even has a photo contest. The information given in this magazine helps you take care of the dogs and that's what I want to do in my print. Modern Dog doesn't use any lists or tips for dogs and that's something I would like to use in my print. Just like listing tips or facts about dogs and how it can make their life better or just for people to have a better understanding of how their dogs think and how they should be treated properly. They have contests where you send a picture of a dog and it gives it the chance of being in the cover of the magazine and I really like that type of interaction with the audience. My target audience is going to be just dog lovers, no age limit and no gender preference. It will be a magazine where every gender and age group can get information about dogs and how to make their lives better. So, I want a magazine that brings everyone together to read about something that will help their dogs, and by helping their dogs it will help their owners to have an easier and long life with their dogs.

The Beginning

Hi! My name is Karla and this is my blog! I recently watched a video about the importance of dogs that was amazing and gave me the idea of creating my magazine about dogs! I checked an article written by Langley Cornwell called "Top 5 Magazines for Dog Lovers" that said that the top 5 dog magazines are "Modern Dog", "The Bark","Dog Fancy Magazine", "Dogster", and "Best Friends Magazine". Most of this magazines are general interest of dogs, but the rest of them are in specific dog topics like "Dog Fancy Magazine" is focused on dogs being in competitions and the problems that they may face.
